The Montreal International Dragon Boat Race Festival is an annual International festival that takes place in the Olympic Basin on Île Notre-Dame in Jean Drapeau Park. This weekend event features dragon boat teams from around North-America competing in 250 meter and 500 meter races. The festival also features live entertainment such as music groups, folk dancing and other cultural entertainment.

The International Dragon Boat Race Festival attracts more than 200 teams from all over North America, along with over 50,000 spectators. The festival features elaborate dragon boats, beating drums and rowers tossing rice into the water.

Arts and crafts, a children’s drawing contest and games are some of the activities offered at the Dragon Boat Festival. A dragon boat is a canoe with 10 rows of benches and the heads and tails of dragons attached at the helm and stern. Each boat seats the 20 paddlers along with the drummer and steersperson. Since the sport of dragon boat racing offers great teamwork experience and interaction, many corporate teams take part in the International Dragon Boat Festival.

Getting to the Dragon Boat Festival

During the festival, free shuttle buses are provided to the Olympic Basin. These shuttle buses leave Chinatown every 30 minutes starting from 10am to 6pm. Although admission to the Dragon Boat Festival is free, you must pay for parking at Jean Drapeau Park..
