At the heart of Plateau Mont Royale is Lafontaine Park. Lafontaine Park is a large 100 year old urban Park that is perfect for relaxing and taking in all that Montréal has to offer. The entire park is surrounded by Victorian homes, along with mature trees, works of public art, and two ponds connected by a waterfall. Montreal’s Lafontaine Park (Parc Lafontaine) is one of Montreal’s largest parks and the largest park in the Plateau Mont-Royal district. The Lafontaine park features beautiful walking paths, pretty ponds and an open-air theatre.
Lafontain park spans several city blocks. Some of the streets surrounding the Lafontaine Park include Sherbrooke, Papineau, Rachel and avenue du Parc-Lafontaine. The park is named after Louis Hyppolite Lafontaine, a famous lawyer and Canadian senator.
Features of the Lafontaine Park
Lafontaine Park is a 40-hectare park that features two linked ponds with a fountain and waterfalls, wading pools, bike paths, playgrounds, picnic areas, a dog park, memorial statues, soccer and baseball fields. In the winter, sections of one pond are available for skating and ice hockey. There are also bike paths that run along the park. The park’s many green spaces are ideal for picnics but you’ll also come across paths with joggers and bicyclists. This immense Park and its surrounding neighborhoods have many kilometers of bike paths.
A Nature-Lover’s Park
Lafontaine Park is a nature-lover’s park. There are many beautiful mature trees and forest areas. You will also find various animals such as squirrels, swans and ducks.
Théâtre de Verdure
The Lafonataine Park contains an open-air outdoor theatre called Théâtre de Verdure. This theatre features many free shows and events during the summer. Many of these free shows include music dance and cinema.
