Traveling to and from Montreal by train is relatively easy. Montreal’s central train station is Central Station (Gare Central in French). It is located in the downtown area of Montreal on De La Gauchetiere, just south of Rene Levesque Blvd. If you are staying in either the Queen Elizabeth or Bonaventure Hotels, then you have a direct access to the Gare Centrale. An underground pedestrian walkway leads to the closest Metro (subway), which happens to be Bonaventure. The Gare Centrale is one of the busiest train stations in Canada and serves as a major hub with over 18 million rail passengers visisting each year.

There are only 2 train companies that offer trips to and from Montreal from the Gare Centrale. VIA Rail is the Canadian company that is responsible for all train services from Montreal to other parts of Canada while Amtrak is responsible for train services to and from the U.S.A. Montreal’s Central station connects passengers to various Canadian cities through VIA Rail. Some of these Canadian cities include Toronto, Ottawa and Quebec City. Montreal’s Central Station connects passengers to various U.S.A. cities through Amtrak. Some of these U.S.A. cities include New York, Wahsington, Boston and Vermont. The trains are usually on time and there are many departure and arrival times available. It is the second-busiest Via Rail station in Canada, after Toronto’s Union Station. Its Via Rail station code is MTRL; its Amtrak code is MTR, and its IATA code is YMY.

Local Montreal Trains

If you want to use the train to travel to areas around Montreal, then there are several commuter lines that run around the city. Central Station also serves passengers using Montreal’s commuter rail service. These commuter lines are run by the AMT, which is the Montreal Transportation Authority. The lines of the AMT reach Rigaud (Montérégie) in the northwest, Blaineville and Deux Montagne in the Laurentians, Delson in the southwest (Montérégie) and St-Hilaire on the south shore (Monteregie).
