Montreal’s Place des Arts is Montreal’s center for the performing arts. It is the home of the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal (Montreal Symphony Orchestra), Les Grands Ballets Canadiens (Canada’s top ballet companies), and the Opéra de Montréal (The Montreal Opera). The Place des Arts was built in 1962 and it is located in Montreal’s downtown area, along rue Ste-Catherine. It is the central piece of Montreal’s Quartier des Spectacles.

There are five theatres that are part of the Place des Arts. These theatres include:
- Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier
- Théâtre Maisonneuve
- Théâtre Jean-Duceppe
- Studio-théâtre
- Cinquième salle
Facilities inside the Place des Arts
The Place des Arts is also the home of the Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal (Montreal’s museum of contemporary arts). Many of the facilities are connected to the Underground City. This includes links to Place-des-Arts metro station as well as Complexe Desjardins, which is right across the street from the Place Des Arts.
Place des Arts and Quartier des Spectacles
The entire complex offers theater, cinema, art, and musical performances. Place des Arts includes the Museum of Contemporary Art, and the Maisonneuve Theater, all connected to the underground city tunnels. The Place des Festivals and Place des Arts complex are on the east side of downtown Montreal, part of the Quartier des Spectacles area. The University de Quebec a Montreal (UQAM) campus is within walking distance to the Place des Arts.
Festivals held at the Place des Arts
The Place des Arts is the prime location for several festivals and events, most notably the International Jazz Festival. During the summer time, many of the streets that surround the Place des Arts become pedestrian-only streets to accommodate the huge crowds that line up the Place des Arts for the various festivities.

This is a most unhelpful website–no calendars, no specific information on events. How can one plan a trip with this?
