The Magic of Lanterns (La Magie des Lanternes) is Montreal’s annual fall festival of lights that marks the arrival of autumn in beautiful style. It is a remarkable celebration of light in the Montreal Botanical Garden’s Chinese Garden. The festival is marked by hundreds of silk lanterns that illuminate various areas of The Chinese Garden. These lanterns light up the water and various walkways around the Chinese Garden. Over the years, the Magic of Lanterns has become the most popular annual event at the Montreal Botanical Gardens.
The Chinese Garden’s Dream Lake
The Chinese Garden’s Dream Lake hosts the largest parts of the event. Illuminated lanterns with various shapes and sizes are displayed primarily on the Chinese Garden’s Dream Lake. Each year hundreds of hand-crafted silk lanterns are imported from China for the festival.
Over 700 Lanterns at the Magic of Lanterns
The Magic of Lanterns is a spectacular event that boasts over 700 traditional lanterns, along with theme lanterns that illuminate the autumn sky. Each lantern used at the festival is handcrafted by a skilful artist in Montreal and in China.
Preparation for the Magic of Lanterns
The Magic of Lanterns is a yearly event that takes nearly a full year to prepare for. The lanterns are designed in Montreal and handcrafted by artists in Shanghai. Designs are picked and sent to a company in Shanghai to produce authentic traditional Chinese lanterns. The lanterns are produced in spring and it takes several months before the order for the lanterns are completed and shipped to Montreal. Many of the of the lanterns are made from a metal or bamboo frame covered in silk.
